Sunday brought the return of the Ironman Triathlon to Raleigh. The event consisted of a 1.2 mile swim in Jordan Lake, a 56 mile bike ride to downtown Raleigh, and a 13.1 mile run around the downtown area.
My wife tackled the swimming leg of the event as part of a relay team, so I found myself sitting on the shore of Jordan Lake watching the sun rise and decided to do a blog post on the event.
I walked around and got some photos and some footage. Here's a video I put together of this leg of the competition:
The area was packed mostly with participants, since it wasn't very convenient for spectators to get to the beach. As such the crowd thinned out considerably as the triathletes finished their swim and headed down the road on their bikes.
After my wife finished her swim and passed on her timing chip, we made are way downtown to the finish line to cheer on the rest of the team.
The weather started out great on Sunday, though it got pretty hot by the afternoon. My hat's off to all those who participated- a lot of hard work goes into training for an event like this and it takes a lot of sweat and determination to power through.
Perhaps one day in the future I'll take a stab at a triathlon myself. For now, here are some photos I snapped:
